Collaboration and Innovation

Whew! We have been BUSY! With what you ask? Here's a list for you to enjoy!

Childcare Expansion Through GOED Grant Completion

One of the significant milestones MDC reached this year was the successful completion of the GOED Childcare Grant, aimed at enhancing local childcare facilities. The initiative addressed a vital need for working families, helped create a plan to return to when in need, with the assistance of KVG Consulting located in the Black Hills, and ensures parents have the necessary resources to maintain work-life balance. With this grant, MDC helped a provider become registered with the state, which we haven’t had in quite some time. We also partnered with the school district and Three Rivers Coop to aid in the application process of the 21st Century grant (After School Program) as well as help with some start up funding for Coyote Club, which their first day was October 28! In addition, we partnered with the school for a Human Development course at the school, promoting early childhood development and opportunities for students to be certified upon graduating high school, to operate daycare facilities. Unfortunately, this class was not available this school year, but hopefully an option for next year!

We recognize our community is in a daycare situation again now and are currently doing our part to assist anyone interested in investing in a childcare facility.

Building Organizations for Local Development (BOLD)

In partnership with Dakota Resources, MDC launched the Building Organizations for Local Development (BOLD) program. This initiative focuses on empowering local leaders and organizations to collaborate more effectively on community-driven projects. Through BOLD, MDC has begun engaging key stakeholders, laying the groundwork for sustained community involvement and economic development.

Infrastructure First With the City of Murdo

In a critical effort to boost infrastructure, MDC completed its Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) in partnership with the City of Murdo. The project was awarded a matching grant from GOED, which partnered with ISG to update CIPs across select communities in a broader statewide initiative to enhance local infrastructure. This plan positions Murdo to stay equipped with the essential amenities needed to support growth, attract new residents, and encourage business development. While there is nothing physical “to see”, this was an integral part of the process of ensuring we have a plan in place and a spot for us to check off our successes.

Legislative Engagement and Facilitation Training

MDC has hosted a few legislative meetings, bringing lawmakers to Murdo and helping put the Magic City on the map. These visits not only provide opportunities to discuss local concerns but also position Murdo as a forward-thinking community committed to finding solutions. Lawmakers leave with a clear understanding that Murdo is working actively toward positive change.

Additionally, Murdo Area Economic Development Director has recently completed Dakota Resources Facilitation training. This specialized training equips participants with tools and methods to craft conversations that lead to positive outcomes. With these new skills, MDC can better engage and lead within the community, fostering open dialogue and collaboration to address challenges and seize opportunities for growth. If there are any groups or organizations in the future that would like to explore using a facilitator for conversations, contact Ashley at 605-516-9080.

Spotlight on Local Businesses: 605 Magazine’s Visit

In a celebration of some of Murdo’s “quick stop” local businesses, MDC hosted 605 Magazine and their Sprinter Van as they interviewed a variety of local entrepreneurs and organizations. These features shine a spotlight on the innovative and dynamic business community in Murdo, raising the profile of the area as a hub of creativity and growth. This has been fun to hear feedback from our constituents across the state and getting a magazine in people’s hands will encourage them to drive past the 4 way stop and see what else Murdo has to offer.

Community Survey and Initial Findings

In September, MDC conducted a comprehensive community survey to gather input on various aspects of life in Murdo. The survey gave the perception of living in the community, the business environment, and growth in the community. Preliminary results have begun circulating among community organizations, providing valuable insights into areas of opportunity and concern.

Key takeaways from the survey include:

Housing: Many residents expressed the need for expanded housing options to accommodate a growing population. The answers improvements to existing houses, list of properties available to purchase for housing, removing old and uninhabited houses and replacing with new structures, rental housing, and most everyone was in agreeance that looking for affordable housing was a must.

Youth Involvement: It was very clear through this survey experience that we gained knowledge that the youth have some really great solutions, and they want to be intentionally invited to participate in opportunities discussing the Murdo area’s future!

Economic Development: Respondents noted the importance of attracting new businesses while supporting existing ones, with a focus on diversifying the local economy. It was noted that overall, our community really supports local businesses when they can! Thank you to all of those that do their best to spread your dollar further within the community.

Infrastructure Improvements: Residents highlighted the need for upgrades in roads, utilities, and public spaces to keep pace with the city's growth. Paved streets were among the highest responses, with a specific focus on Main Street. Along with updated roads, were suggestions for a community clean up and bringing pride back to our store fronts and homes.

These insights will help guide MDC’s future initiatives, ensuring that the community's voice remains central to ongoing development efforts. The MDC looks forward to continuing some of these conversations surrounding the Community Survey at our Annual Meeting in March.

Tourism and Economic Development: Showcasing Rural Success

MDC recently hosted the Department of Tourism board for their quarterly meeting in Murdo. The evening before the board meeting, MDC curated an opportunity for the board to “Explore Rural” entrepreneurship, visiting Grandview Gallery in Okaton and Sugar Coated’s Cookie Barn north of town. Both businesses, run by working mothers, exemplify how women in rural areas can successfully operate beautiful businesses while staying close to home and being present for their children and family. These visits highlighted the unique opportunities and success stories emerging from the prairie, reinforcing Murdo’s commitment to fostering economic development in rural settings. It was an honor to host the Tourism board, and we look forward to continuing partnerships with the Tourism board moving forward.

Key Partner Event: Strengthening Local Partnerships

In a testament to the power of collaboration, MDC hosted a Key Partner Event last week as part of its BOLD investment. The gathering brought together local leaders, business owners, and stakeholders to discuss shared goals and align efforts toward the future of Murdo. These partnerships are central to MDC’s mission of creating a prosperous, thriving community. Our hope is to continue the conversation and continue working towards the goal for all of us - a thriving community.

While it's been a lot of fun, we're also excited to step back for a minute and begin enjoying some time with our loved ones and families!

But I am sure we will be working on more greatness in this short break... ;)
