Support Local

In the news, from business owners, and small communities like Murdo, we are always hearing SHOP LOCAL. Absolutely, shopping at local businesses is a crucial aspect of fostering a thriving community and a strong local economy. But what about SUPPORT LOCAL? Is there a difference? Supporting a local business goes hand in hand with shop local, but what about supporting local events or fundraisers? I absolutely feel supporting local events, fundraisers, and opportunities for change or improvement within the community are equally important aspects of fostering a strong and vibrant local environment.

During this summer, our community organized a diverse range of events aimed at providing joy for everyone. Occasionally, it was saddening to hear criticism about the efforts put into organizing or sustaining events. This led me to ask myself: when can we find the space to put aside disagreements and prioritize the overall well-being of our communities/county/region? How can we bridge these gaps and foster a sense of togetherness that benefits everyone involved?

While I may not have the answer and know that I probably never will have the answer, these are a couple of questions I consider and ask myself quite frequently! A little research I have done shows the number one perk to consider-supporting local means that you care about the community that you live in. You'll be able to put money back into your community and the other people who call it home, too. Here are some ideas to share on how to support local in our community:

  1. Help maintain the local area.

  2. Donate or support a local non-profit.

  3. Support your local shops and businesses.

  4. Help a community member out, when in need.

  5. Offer a helping hand at non-profit events that you're passionate about.

  6. Attend and support events that suit your lifestyle.

  7. Attend school-related events.

By working together and supporting local, our overall community pride will continue to build and naturally there will be a positive aura around the community, attracting others to see what we have going on.

Keep up the good work Jones County! I can't wait to continue seeing the improvements we are all working on daily!
